Artist in Residence
I use narrative fragments to create assemblages, which I present in various forms: texts, videos, audio recordings or installations. In switching from one medium to another, I explore the strangeness of the everyday, the power of words and the ties between people.

My current work is comprised of China ink drawings to which I add texts and various documents. I explore existential and identity-related issues, notably by drawing inspiration from Montaigne’s Essays. “This also happens to me: that I do not find myself in the place where I look; and I find myself more by chance encounter than by searching my judgment.”

My works—often the fruit of a collaboration, in particular with Serge Murphy—have been shown in many European countries, in Mexico and in Japan. In Quebec, I have notably presented installations at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, the Biennale de Montréal and the Manifestation d’art internationale de Québec.

My training, which is primarily literary, has led me publish three books: Les Inquiets, Le beau voyage éducatif and Les bûcherons de l'impossible (with Dgino Cantin, published by Sagamie).

Marie-Josée Laframboise was born in Quebec City and lives and works in Montreal. She obtained a BFA from Université du Québec à Montréal (UQÀM) in 1987 and an MFA from Concordia University in 2002. In 2000, while she was studying for her MFA, she participated in an international exchange at the Glasgow School of Arts. Her works have been presented as part of solo and group exhibitions, notably at the Ottawa Art Gallery, Musée d’art de Joliette, Centre de diffusion et de production de la photographie VU, Southern Alberta Art Gallery, Le Quartier; Centre d’art contemporain (Quimper), Musée d’Art Moderne et d’Art Contemporain (Nice), Kunstraum Dornbirn (Autriche), Musée régional de Rimouski, Centre d’art contemporain (Bruxelles), Galerie de l’UQAM, Langage Plus, CIRCA, Espace-musée de Québécor, Grenfell Campus Art Gallery, and the Art Gallery of Hamilton. Her works are part of major private and public collections, such as the Prêt d’oeuvres d’art of the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, the Musée d’art de Joliette, the Cirque du Soleil collection as well as the Fondation Christoph Merian, in Switzerland.

My approach to sculpture is characterized by site-specific installations. The expanse of a space, its constraints, the materials, and the onsite resources contribute to the development of a concrete intervention. My site-specific works construct, draw, configure or capture a territory. My installations can also be viewed from a graphic viewpoint, in so far that they are directly based on using a surface to draw strokes which seek to represent elements of figures in a network. It is this type of expression that I translate into the exhibition space. The thread, tube, net, and hoop are all forms that graphically take over the architectural volumes. The materials that I hang on the spaces’ walls create novel and unusual routes which invite us to move inside the structures or, on the contrary, to bypass pre-established passageways.

In addition to my research on spatial appropriation and the networking of multiple materials, I have developed a drawing practice, which accompanies my installation approach in an exploration of space-related issues. In the same vein, my research has been transposed through my low-angle photographs of electrical cables, which compartmentalize and crisscross our everyday environment. These entanglements of lines, captured from various angles, have become linear compositions.

In my visual art practice, I create fantasies of security, surveillance and technology inspired by the Cold War. My work examines how human character and knowledge are formed in a climate of suspicion and a dearth of reliable information, as public and policy makers alike languish in the grip of irresolvable ideological fantasies and an insufficiently critical embrace of technology. I am also intrigued by how, despite this climate of paranoia and militarism, new possibilities in art and science penetrated and reshaped the public mind—on both sides of the Iron Curtain, albeit in different forms. Therefore, my projects draw upon the political and popular culture of the period, appropriating its tropes and styles, narratives and traditions. In this regard, the fields of Cold War cinema, sci-fi literature and consumer electronics are particularly exciting to me, and their vivid aesthetic vocabularies appear and operate throughout my work.

Winnipeg-born, Montreal-based visual artist Edwin Janzen works in digital imaging, photography, video, installation, artist books, and other media. His work has been exhibited in galleries across Canada. Edwin completed his MFA at the University of Ottawa (2010) and his BFA at Concordia University (2008). He also holds a BA in history (Byzantine Empire) from the University of Manitoba (1993). Edwin serves on the board of directors of Articule, a Montreal artist-run centre.

Working primarily in the medium of installation, but also that of photography and video, Karine Payette creates fictional environments that function as freeze frames in which narratives are suspended.

In her work, she uses everyday objects to construct extensive dream-like scenes in a hyperrealist manner. These mises-en-scène serve to hint at a potential narrative which evokes the precariousness of our surrounding world. Through the playful use of everyday objects that are transposed into extraordinary situations, she craftily toys with our vision of things, so as to stimulate reflection about the instability of the materials and forms which are part of our living environments. She questions notions of comfort and displeasure in a perpetually transforming world.
Karine Payette, who holds a MFA from UQAM, lives and works in Montreal. Her works have been displayed in solo exhibitions, notably at the Galerie de l’UQAM (Confort instable, 2012) and at Le lieu, Centre en art actuel in Quebec City (L’autre dimanche matin, 2012). She has also participated in group exhibitions, in particular in the 31st International Symposium of Contemporary Art of Baie-Saint-Paul held under the theme of To Act, and in the inaugural exhibition of the Centre Bang in Chicoutimi with her installation À distance perdue. In the Fall of 2014, her new works will be shown at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal (MACM) as part of the documentary series on contemporary art put together by Arsenal art contemporain, in partnership with the MACM. In November 2014, a solo exhibition of her work is being presented at the Maison de la culture du Plateau-Mont-Royal.

Artist in Residence Since 1995, I have been using installation (drawings, objects and photographs), video and performance to explore connections, possible areas for exchanges between the body and its environment. Understanding the body as a social construction, I am interested in the influence of medicine and domestic space on the understanding of what constitutes us as human beings. Through the different social roles that we toy with and come to internalize, I am fascinated by the various ways in which one can inhabit, depict and talk about the body.

Through my work I explore curiosity, wonder, and enchantment, while celebrating diverse ways of being in the world. My current research draws from conceptual and theoretical discourses of ghosts and hauntings and the many possible meanings they engender. In my most recent works, these interests are being distilled into concepts and gestures of the trace as well as movement, light, and shadows. Consistent with my previous works, my art celebrates the tangible and intangible, the real and the imagined, as well as the potentiality of transformation.

Ed Pien received his BFA from UWO and MFA from York University. He has shown work at the Victoria and Albert Museum (London), The Goethe Institute (Berlin), the Art Gallery of Ontario; the Musée des beaux arts and Musée d’Art Contemporain (Montreal); Songzhuang Art Centre (Beijing) and the National Art Gallery of Canada. Recent major exhibitions include the Sydney Biennale, the Moscow Biennale, and Oh Canada at MASS MoCA. Pien teaches part-time in the Visual Studies Department at the University of Toronto and is represented by Pierre-François Ouellette Art Contemporain, Montreal; Birch Contemporary, Toronto; and Galerie Maurits van de Laar, The Hague.

Lorna Bauer

Lorna Bauer
Artiste en résidence / Artist in Residence

My work is primarily lens based working in photography, film, and video. I use my work to question - in a reflective way- the less visible aspects of making art, at times analyzing how images are constructed, represented and mediated. Projects are generally characterized as historical site related works made over several months and develop out of site-specific research, leading to precise works that respond to a given context. Many of these works begin out of an interest in the architecture, the urban plan, and personal histories of a particular place. My practice involves deconstruction and reconstruction of forms (collage, images superimposed) including an interest in the function of objects and the nature of their representation.

Bauer lives and works in Montreal. She has presented her work in solo exhibitions at Galerie Nicolas Robert; Sporobole; YYZ Artist Outlet; Gallery Les Territoires; The University of Toronto Art Centre and in the Projection Access Space at the Art Gallery of Mississauga. Recently, Bauer’s work was included in The Work Ahead of Us at the Musée d'art Contemporain de Montréal; Decisive Moments, Somewhere Else at Trinity Square Video, Art Metropole and Convenience gallery (w Jon Knowles). Bauer has been awarded two Conseil des Arts et Lettres studio residencies, one in New York City as part of the Québec-New York State residency exchange (2012), and the other at the Couvent des Récollets, in Paris (2013). Upcoming activities include a solo exhibition at Modern Fuel in Kingston and Dazibao in Montreal.

EXHIBITION April 17, 2014 / July 4, 2014
Opening Thursday, April 21, 5 p.m
Terres is an artistic project that began during a creation residency at the Sagamie artist centre, which is located in the region where I grew up. After several years of focusing primarily on the impact of industrialization and urban development, I felt compelled to reconnect with my roots and to return to a rural territory. However, it appears that there is no way of escaping reality: all these questions of humanity’s impact on the environment were soon back on the table. Over the last 30 years the Quebecois countryside has undergone profound changes due to the industrialization of agriculture: vertically integrated hog farming, monoculture, excessive mechanization, streamlined agricultural production; all this has profoundly modified the rural landscape, which nevertheless still appears to be bucolic in the eyes of city dwellers. Terres is the result of these wanderings through the territories of my adolescence, in search of vanished landscapes.

Born in Switzerland, Mériol Lehmann has resided in Quebec for a number of years. Whether in the form of performances or installations, his works in media arts and photography have been presented at numerous events, including Mois Multi, Festival de cinéma des Trois Amériques, VU PHOTO, FIMAV and Galerie B-312. He is currently working on man-altered landscapes, especially those impacted by industrialization. In addition to his artistic projects, he is involved in sound design and musical creation for dance and theatre. He is also Avatar’s director.

Diane Gougeon

Diane Gougeon
Artiste en résidence / Artist in Residence (English follows)

Over several months, she has recorded commonplace traces left by technology on natural elements in her immediate environment. In this work, a series of silhouettes of trees, deformed by the passage of electric cable, will for the first time meet surfaces of snow dotted with residues of sand and gravel, and transformed by the effects of frequent winter thaws. With these opposing images, Diane Gougeon will compose a vast landscape joining installation and photography that will become an interactive and animated work.
Diane Gougeon inserts her practice into the complex relationship between nature and technology. Her installations are presented on the scale of the exhibition space in order to reproduce changes of state in nature and to revisit these phenomena through the prism of familiar technologies, whose presence does not, however, overwhelm. Her works invite contemplation, and they offer sensory experiences wherein matter is modified before the viewer’s eyes. The works are equally an invitation to face our accelerated relationship to the world and to cast a critical look upon the ecological and technological issues in our daily lives.
Over the last twenty years Diane Gougeon’s works have been featured in numerous solo exhibitions in Canada (Halifax, Moncton, Ottawa, Quebec, Toronto) and abroad (Services culturels canadiens, Paris, Centre d'art contemporain Passages, Troyes), and more recently at the Centre d’exposition Plein-Sud (Longueuil, 2013) and at Artspace (Peterborough, 2012). Diane Gougeon has created several public art works in Quebec, and her art has been the subject of three monographic publications.

Through superposition, juxtaposition and the addition of current technologies, I question the materiality of painting under the theme of “monstration” (from the Latin monstrare, meaning to show), as an act of showing, as an echo to the word monster, and the fortuitous revelation of all too human expressions. The worlds that I explore are playful and open to interpretation, I revisit memory by way of timeless, spiritual and even unreal symbols, I play on ambiguities. I personify my subject by distorting its physical and human form to create a work in which the viewer contemplates an assemblage of destabilizing elements that foreground emotion. A pretext to explore the deepest depths of emotion, and a pretext to build. Behind the work’s formal composition, a fundamental state of mind of a poetic nature makes itself manifest. Is it tolerable to face one’s own gaze, or further still the gaze that others direct toward us, not to speak of the fear of seeing oneself in the gaze of the other. Mirror effect or dizziness before the abyss?

In transposing Alfred Jarry’s ideas about 'Pataphysics to the visual arts, I fragment my previously created works to use them as my material or medium to compose a new work, according to a process of constructive destruction.

Manon Pelletier was born in Quebec. She holds an MFA from the Université du Québec à Montréal. She has received grants from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec and the Canada Council for the Arts. Artiste en résidence / Artist in Residence
(English follows)

Artist in Residence

Jean-Maxime Dufresne and Virginie Laganière have been collaborating on a regular basis since 2003. Their work investigates transformations in the built environment and urban territories, tying those to sociopolitical issues, the human psyche and unresolved phenomena. Drawing from fictional and documentary strategies, their work primarily uses installation, photography, video, sound recording and data collecting. Their ongoing research explores the complexity of post-olympic realities that are often deemed controversial as they generate profound changes in the urban and social fabric of cities. With a focus on certain Olympic sites of the last decades, the work at Sagamie attempts to unearth the potential of their architectural, symbolic and social adaptation, as well as the place these sites hold in the collective imaginary. This research was initiated in 2012 during a residency in Barcelona and has since been carried on to Beijing, Athens, Sarajevo and Montreal. A first instalment of their photographic installation will be exhibited at Centre VU later in 2014.

While both artists are Montreal-based, the anthropological nature of their work has recently led them to participate in art residencies abroad, such as the Inside Out Art Museum in Beijing (China), Homesession in Barcelona (Spain), Finnish Artists Studio Foundation in Espoo-Helsinki (Finland), Fondation Christoph Merian / iaab in Basel (Switzerland) and the Titanik Gallery in Turku (forthcoming, Finland). Their individual and collaborative work has been exhibited in different venues in Québec and internationally, most recently at the Darling Foundry and the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA).

Victoria Stanton

Victoria Stanton
Artiste en résidence / Artist in Residence
(English follows)

Victoria Stanton
Artist in Residence

Victoria Stanton (Montreal, Canada) is an interdisciplinary artist working with live action, human interaction, video, film, photo, drawing, and writing. Continually exploring within such diverse media, while the outward results of her practice manifest in a multiplicity of forms, performance is the unifying central focus and invariable core of her research. Her time-based work includes performance for stage, performance for the camera, actions in public spaces, and one-on-one encounters in intimate contexts. Whether participatory, durational, task-based or audio-visual, her work is an investigation into the ability (and the desire) to hold a space, to appropriate and disrupt the quotidian, to create spontaneous intimacy, to tread vulnerability. Investing a performative presence and consciousness within multiple spaces / times, she continuously underscores the complex aspects of “transaction” and the possibility for transformation.

Stanton has presented exhibitions, performances, interventions, and films/videos in Canada, the U.S., Europe, the U.K., Australia, Japan and Mexico. Her creative and critical writings have been published in Canadian and American anthologies and art/literary/lifestyle magazines, with one of her articles garnering a finalist position for the Prix de la SODEP in March 2013. She is the co-author with Vincent Tinguely of Impure: Reinventing the Word (conundrum press, 2001) and is currently working on a new book with the TouVA Collective (comprised of Anne Bérubé, Sylvie Tourangeau and Stanton) developing salient notions on how performance is practiced and on the question of “the performative”.

ADOLAND: PHOTOGRAPHY & VIDEO

Created between 2011 and 2014, the ADOLAND project uses the adolescent's bedroom as the theater of operations. Caroline Hayeur has enabled an opportunity for time travel through the current and past adolescence of her thirty subjects. She met teenagers who allowed her to enter their private lair. Their bedrooms turned out to be an infinite reserve of stories that reveal their inner and projected selves, their emerging individuation. She also gathered “testimony” from adults about their own youth, accessing memories that had been buried to various degrees. Through her research, she discovered that the rooms of several of these former teenagers are preserved as mausoleums of sorts. As archeology from different eras, but representing the same passage to into adulthood, the teenager's bedroom is fertile ground for photography.

ADOLAND will be presented from March 15 to April 27, 2014 at maison de la culture de Côte-des-Neiges: 5290, Ch. de la Côte-des-Neiges, Montreal - 514 872-6889. Opening: Wednesday, March 26 from 5 to 7 pm.

Catherine Plaisance
Artiste en résidence / Artist in Residence
(English follows)

Catherine Plaisance
Artist in Residence

Catherine Plaisance’s practice is characterized by an inquiry that is primarily informed by an aesthetics of catastrophe. She uses various media, such as photography, video, collage, and drawing to explore this subject. Her recent work draws on the miniature form to create scenes in which the landscape is disrupted by an event that derails the everyday course of things. Transcribed via photography and video these events subsequently take shape as an image. The transdisciplinary spatial display of these various retranscriptions suggests the existence of different levels of reality, which are governed by diverse logics.

Catherine Plaisance’s work has been shown, among others, at Galerie Sans Nom (Moncton, 2004), at the Maison de la culture Mont-Royal (Montreal, 2008), at Galerie SAS (Montreal, 2009), at Galerie Simon Blais (Montreal, 2011), at the VU Photo centre as well as at La Bande Vidéo (Quebec City, 2012). Chloé Beaulac

Chloé Beaulac
Artiste en résidence / Artist in Residence
(English follows)

Chloé Beaulac is a multidisciplinary artist living and working mainly in Montréal. She graduated in 2010 from Concordia University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, majoring in Print Media.

Understanding our role in nature and history is at the heart of Beaulac's artistic pursuit. In the manner of an explorer, she travels a territory letting it infuse her with its history, myths, and personalities. Having shared these encounters with nature, Beaulac can allow her audience to relive an awakening of the senses through her screenprints, drawings, paintings, sculptures and multimedia works. Her process of deconstruction and reconstruction is Beaulac's way of recreating the ephemeral nature of epiphanies. She studies events that have the power to evoke a sense of personal transformation, drawing upon their various spaces, objects and relationships in order to reproduce or capture the essence of their transformative qualities. By virtue of this process, Beaulac offers her audience supernatural environments to explore at their own accord.

Beaulac's artworks have been exhibited across Canada and abroad. She has received numerous prizes and distinctions, her works can be found in many private and public collections, both in Canada and internationally.

In my work, the human body is continually evoked, although its presence is always absent. This singularity is the result of a mnemonic game accentuated by the choice of materials, the work process and the subject. Associations of ideas, uniting imaginary elements with historical experiences, both individual and universal, are transposed in arrangements of everyday objects or transformed raw materials.

During my artistic residency at Sagamie, my project will be a research laboratory allowing me to familiarize myself with the digital medium while continuing my exploration of the human silhouette inserted in timeless contexts. This is a follow-up to my Paysages-vêtements project comprising four exhibitions evoking the seasons and, metaphorically, the cycle of creation.

Born in Quebec City, Carole Baillargeon divides her time between Deschambault and Quebec City. She completed her doctoral studies in the Study and Practice of Arts at the Université du Québec à Montréal, a Master’s in Fine Arts and a Bachelor’s in Scenography at Concordia University in Montreal.

In my drawings, sculptures and installations, I observe, document, measure and trace the sweep of the passing days. Like a landscape with multiple horizons, familiar objects are imbued with imagery and memory and it is through these that I attempt to understand the world. I focus primarily on cultural and social space, on disorientation as well as landscape. I observe the crucial impact of climate on the unfolding of daily life and one’s image of oneself and of the other.

The elliptical form of the fragment allows me to probe the notion of identity, the flimsiness and otherness of human life. This speculation is part and parcel of my creative process, an exploration of the metaphorical potential of the found or salvaged object. Deprived of their original significance, these small vestiges of daily life are the silent witnesses of our intimate and collective lives, real and imaginary.

My artistic practice employs a hybrid approach fueled by the interaction of drawing, sculpture and photography, moving beyond the formal limits of these individual disciplines. I will often integrate drawings into the object by means of engraving, printing, embroidery and writing. I employ the technique of assemblage to establish relationships between subject and object through the prism of memory.

She has completed several artistic residencies at the Centre EST NORD EST in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, the Banff Centre in Alberta, in Belém in Brazil and recently at the Quebec studio in London.

As a painter or as a photographer, my work has always been characterized by the use of poetic language. I am driven by an obsession with objects and the pleasure of collecting. It was, as a matter of fact, this obsession which led me to photography as a means of enriching my work as a painter. With the passage of time, this detour into photography has progressed from a collection of powerful images to a creative work in itself. A new form of language began to develop as the two techniques blended into each other while each maintained its unique quality.

My photographic work situates itself at the intersection of prudishness and voyeurism in the obsession for objects and their fragmentary relationship with the world. My works inhabit an indefinite and dislocated space and time, inspired by what photography affirms through the juxtaposition of disparate elements. In this manner, my subjects are frontal enigmas that maintain a suspended narrative tension. Each individual work is an attempt to reveal the full extent of the proximity and otherness which defines the subjects and tells a “story of self” in a language refined to the point of poetry. The completed work is an amalgam of outbursts and whisperings distinctly addressed to the other.

Artist in Residence

The forms, vocabulary and movements associated with the art of painting have, after a fashion, become the paradigm through which I perceive both my studio work and the reality around me. The act of painting is extended by other means: the lens takes over from the brush through a demanding process that nonetheless authorizes the pleasure of play and a potent aleatory dimension.

In the Dissolution series, I recycle the vocabulary of geometric abstraction by painting and cutting up forms which I can freely bring together and rearrange on a single plan. I then photograph these forms, often several hundred times, using relatively long exposures. In doing so, I explore possible combinations of the fundamental parameters of painting and photography: tint, tonality, saturation, contrast, and the various methods of applying paint; the camera’s movement while capturing a shot, the positioning of the body vis à vis the subject, and the various motion blur effects in photography.

Chance and camera movement combine to create a divergence between the image and its source. Forms and colours proliferate, dissolve, produce visual effects. Though painting, its vocabulary, and its history remain the raw material of my photographic work, their presence is ultimately more allusive than ever, dissipated and indeterminate
