Terres
est un projet artistique débuté lors d’une résidence de création au
centre d’artistes SAGAMIE d’Alma, dans la région qui m’a vu grandir.
Après avoir été accaparé dans les dernières années par l’impact de
l’industrialisation sur le développement urbain, j’ai ressenti le besoin
de reconnecter avec mes racines, de retourner dans le territoire rural.
Il semble toutefois que la réalité nous rattrape toujours : toutes ces
questions du poids de l’homme sur son environnement se sont bien vite
retrouvées sur la table. Depuis les 30 dernières années, la campagne
québécoise a subi des changements profonds dus à l’industrialisation de
l’agriculture : les intégrateurs porcins, les monocultures, la
mécanisation à outrance, la rationalisation des fermes; tout cela
modifie en profondeur le paysage rural qui semble malgré tout garder son
apparence bucolique pour les urbains. Terres est le résultat de ces
errances dans les territoires de mon adolescence, à rechercher des
paysages disparus.
Né en Suisse, mais vivant au Québec depuis de
nombreuses années, Mériol Lehmann œuvre en arts médiatiques et en
photographie. Son travail a notamment été présenté au Mois Multi, au
Festival de cinéma des 3 Amériques et à VU PHOTO à Québec, au Festival
International de Musique Actuelle de Victoriaville et à la Galerie B-312
à Montréal, que ce soit sous forme de performance, d’installation ou
d’exposition. À travers sa pratique, l’artiste s’interroge vivement sur
la thématique des paysages altérés par l’homme et s’intéresse, entre
autres, à l’impact de l’industrialisation sur le territoire.
Parallèlement à sa carrière artistique, Mériol Lehmann réalise la
conception sonore et musicale d’œuvres théâtrales et chorégraphiques. Il
assume également la fonction de directeur général chez Avatar à Québec.

Terres is
an artistic project that began during a creation residency at the
Sagamie artist centre, which is located in the region where I grew up.
After several years of focusing primarily on the impact of
industrialization and urban development, I felt compelled to reconnect
with my roots and to return to a rural territory. However, it appears
that there is no way of escaping reality: all these questions of
humanity’s impact on the environment were soon back on the table. Over
the last 30 years the Quebecois countryside has undergone profound
changes due to the industrialization of agriculture: vertically
integrated hog farming, monoculture, excessive mechanization,
streamlined agricultural production; all this has profoundly modified
the rural landscape, which nevertheless still appears to be bucolic in
the eyes of city dwellers. Terres is the result of these wanderings
through the territories of my adolescence, in search of vanished
landscapes.
Born in Switzerland, Mériol Lehmann has resided in
Quebec for a number of years. Whether in the form of performances or
installations, his works in media arts and photography have been
presented at numerous events, including Mois Multi, Festival de cinéma
des Trois Amériques, VU PHOTO, FIMAV and Galerie B-312. He is currently
working on man-altered landscapes, especially those impacted by
industrialization. In addition to his artistic projects, he is involved
in sound design and musical creation for dance and theatre. He is also
Avatar’s director.
