PAYSAGE NOUVEAU/ prise 2

PAYSAGE NOUVEAU/ prise 2

Diane Gougeon will continue working on her project "Paysage nouveau" initiated during her first stay in April, 2014.

The artist’s most recent project brings together two groups of images she has collected. Over several years, she has recorded ordinary traces left by technology on natural elements in her immediate environment. In this work, a series of silhouettes of trees, deformed by the passage of electric cable, will for the first time meet the surfaces of snow dotted with residues of sand, gravel, and the effects of winter’s thawing. With these opposing images, Diane Gougeon will compose a vast landscape joining installation and photography that will become an interactive and kinetic work.

Diane Gougeon inserts her practice into the complex relationship between nature and technology. Her installations are presented on the scale of the exhibition space in order to reproduce changes of state in nature and to revisit these phenomena through the prism of familiar technologies, whose presence does not, however, overwhelm. Her works invite contemplation, and they offer sensory experiences wherein matter is modified before the viewer’s eyes. The works are equally an invitation to face our accelerated relationship to the world and to cast a critical look upon the ecological and technological issues in our daily lives.

Over the last twenty years Diane Gougeon’s works have been featured in numerous solo exhibitions in Canada and abroad. Diane Gougeon has created several public art works in Quebec, and her art has been the subject of three monographic publications.

The wild state is my forgotten nature. I have to take back what I lost, what belongs to me. An empty when I moved the extensive human beauty and ugliness. Instinctively metaphors emerge. I dig my guts, digging through scraps of traditional knowledge ... what remains. I have a visceral desire for freedom to be myself and feed.

I fed it with no known cause most of my nostalgia, the teenager in me that runs out. In the moment, femininity, violence and obsession with the body govern me. The incongruity human touches me, I intertwined my thoughts here and I'll regurgitate. The past mingles with the present.

In my creations, the human and animal anatomy looming, death and life coexist. Merge, bones, organs, muscles and rivers. I fragmenting and accumulating internal and external structures. Intuitively I sculpt the raw material for its symbolism and beauty, I tenfold distorde figures for them to take power. The range of media used in my work occupies an important place in the process. Wood, wire, glass, bronze, stone ... Many complex ideas blend together in one piece. Despite myself, sensuality and sweetness dominate.

My sculptures seem to come out of a dream, which comes poetry, narrative and memory. I want to be an anachronism among civilized track my nature and nurture of others.

Born in Québec in 1985, Ito holds diplomas in sculpture and glass art. Her works are unfolding chimeras with strong primitive touches as she examines the beauty and ugliness of living beings. Femininity, violence and body obsession govern her art – instinctively metaphors emerge. In her creations the human and animal anatomy are omnipresent with looming death and the coexistence of life. By choosing media for their symbolism and strength she sculpts a range of materials, those which occupy an important place in her creative process, to enable the blending of several complex ideas together in one work of art. Despite her somewhat aggressive approach, sensuality dominates. Seemly to originate from the unconscious in which her memories, written and spoken words are expressed and brought to light.

Jonas St. Michael

Jonas St. Michael
Artiste en résidence / Artist in Residence

(English follows)

Jonas St. Michael
Artist in Residence

Since 2009, Jonas St. Michael has exhibited his photographic work in Canada, the United States and Europe. His practice is mainly concerned with the nature of image and representation in relation to different socio-political structures, institutions, and class distinctions. Excess and deprivation are themes that have served as the foundation for much of his artistic research.

His current practice, in particular, draws inspiration from the world of mediated imagery: cinema, TV, advertising, painting, sculpture, different literary models and his own everyday experience. They are worlds that imply desire, commerce and image.

More recently, his practice has shifted to making works that are conspicuously constructed with the goal of creating an ostensible reality. His concerns lie in examining the meaning of fiction, yet something more than simply the constructing of an imaginary world, but rather a re-framing of the ‘real’; building new relationships between reality and appearance.

Jonas St. Michael was born in Montreal and holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from Goldsmiths, University of London and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Concordia University in Montreal. His photographic practice explores the nature of representation and its relation to wider cultural and social contexts. Although his projects are diverse, they share a common theme inasmuch as they attempt to communicate a social reality while addressing the area between truth and fiction in representational imagery.

Jonas St. Michael has exhibited nationally and internationally including OK Harris (New York City, USA), Latitude 53 (Edmonton, Canada) and Les Territoires (Montreal, Canada). He has upcoming solo exhibitions at VU PHOTO in Quebec City and at the Orleans Gallery at the Ottawa School of Art. In 2016, he will be an artist-in-residence at the British School at Rome.

Max Wyse

Max Wyse
Artiste en résidence / Artist in Residence

(English follows)

Focusing on the theme of hybridization and fictional documentation, I am interested in collage as a means to think and organize an excess of images. Using the smartphone as a production and archival tool, I appropriate still images from videos and films, pictures of campaign posters and real estate agent signboards, old vacation photos, deformed computer screens, etc. I filter these images through a combination of applications that I repurpose to ends other than they were intended for. These applications are for the most part designed to produce visual jokes for instantaneous dissemination on social media. Through a process of repeated layers, I obtain a fragile, one could even say raw image quality that I preserve in the works’ final form. However, this possibility of creating image crossbreeds remains comical. The documentation becomes a source for a fiction in which figures play out a hybridization comedy without end, as one face takes on multiple guises.

Born in British Columbia in 1974, Max Wyse lives and works in Montreal. His works propose a symbiosis between disparate and hybrid objects scattered in  indeterminate spaces. Like the fragments of a hushed story, the meaning of which nevertheless remains mysterious, Max Wyse’s works function like a mirror revealing the tensions beneath the torn skin of a fantastical unconscious. A motley, multiple and disjointed world, where the bizarre is part of the most ordinary everyday.

His work has been exhibited throughout Canada, notably in Montreal, Vancouver and Toronto as well as in Paris and New York. His works are part of several collections including the Musée Régional de Rimouski and the Prêt d’oeuvres d’art du Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec. He is a regular recipient of grants from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec and the Canada Council for the Arts.

Thing-places

Much like vague memories, the places that dwell within us are punctuated by voids. Some of these voids are filled by the imagination, other are left in a fragmentary state, present despite their incompleteness, like ruins. Using the camera in the manner of a sculptor attempting to mould the entirety of predefined space, I make use of photography as a construction material in my practice. I am drawn to vernacular and domestic spatial designs and therefore photograph my subjects in detail to subsequently recreate them by hand, piece by piece. This deliberately obstinate desire to perfectly reconstruct the subject springs from an unhinged logic that leads to a confrontation between the various perspectives of the subject’s shot. Between the attempt at a “faithful” reproduction of the subject and the inevitably shifted result, a tension arises that I make use of as a distortion tool. Once the subject is extirpated from the initial situation, the white that demarcates its borders reconnects with the voids which it comprises. The photographed place thus appears as distinct from that which it contains and that which contains it. Beside itself and the world, the place becomes a thing.

Florence Le Blanc practices photography in a multiform approach in which she brings together sculptural, artisanal and architectural perspectives. She has held various positions related to visual arts research and dissemination, notably as the coordinator of the Éditions J’ai VU (2009-2012). She presented her work in several solo and group shows, in Quebec and abroad, particularly in France and Brazil. For several years, the artist has been pursuing doctoral studies (Université Laval) which focus on photography’s narrative potentialities, and more broadly in the hybrid forms generated through its interactions with other languages.

I am interested in the narrative potential that inheres in objects from popular culture. I put together collections with various specimens of a specific object to compare the multiple differences and resemblances between them and to outline their possible forms. In my recent work, I seek to transform these objects in order to create a novel poetic experience that goes beyond the mere exhibition mode, for example by drawing explosions on the pages of an architecture book, or by laying hockey cards out on a surface to pastiche canonical works in the history of abstract painting.

Drawing on the readymade and citation, I aim to poetically transform banal realities, to invent stories and imaginaries by way of objects that are trivial and common, kitschy or ridiculous; and to reflect the myths and fads of North American popular culture. At once playful and conceptual, my work poses anthropological and sociological questions, since it foregrounds the relationship we have with text, image and the object.

Marc-Antoine K. Phaneuf is a visual artist and author. Since 2006, his work has been presented in several artist-run centres, galleries and museums in Quebec, such as the Centre d’art et de diffusion Clark, l’Œil de Poisson, Musée régional de Rimouski, Leonard and Bina Ellen Gallery and Galerie Antoine Ertaskiran. He has published three books of poetry with the Éditions Le Quartanier, among which Téléthons de la Grande Surface (Inventaire catégorique) in 2008, for which he was a Prix Émile-Nelligan finalist, and Cavalcade en cyclorama in 2013, which he wrote during an eight-day writing performance. He lives and works in Montreal.

My works draw their inspiration in parallel to my architectural research. I seek to highlight the everyday contrasts around us, such as death and life; presence and absence, the true and false. I want to provide the viewer with a head-on experience of a world in which a predominantly ethereal, blurred and hazy atmosphere provides no points of reference, thereby enabling me to alternate between the composition and decomposition of the space. This idea of partaking in something that is undergoing modification and evolving is central to my material exploration. My latest research is increasingly a hybrid between traditional techniques and digital tools, as I go from one to the other to generate forms that are subsequently deformed by this same image making process. I thus play with the objects’ scale in order to create visual ambiguities that prompt one to question what there is between one and the other, between fiction and reality, between the physical and the impalpable.

Luca Fortin is currently a candidat in the professional MA program in architecture at Université Laval, where he also completed a graduate micro-program in artist book creation. He has received recognition for his work from numerous sources: as a recipient of the Youth Award (2008) given by the Lieutenant-Governor of Quebec; the Canadian Millennium Foundation (2009); the W.Garfield Weston Foundation (2009); The Loran Award Foundation (2010); Forces Avenir au collégial (2011), as well as Université Laval which provided his with an artistic leadership grant in 2014. His works are part of the Loto-Québec collection and several private collections.

Back from a three month residency in Berlin, my mind filled with images and my hard disk overflowing with digital files. The experimentations I undertook over there are an extension of my recent work, which is based on a hybridization of photography and painting. The inherent constraints of such a context have evidently led to unexpected results. However, quite to the contrary of what I had expected, the Berlin experience in fact reinforced my use of an increasingly simplified vocabulary.

While the processes used during the shoot are rigorous, they also involve a substantial random dimension. I test the limits of my body, tools and techniques. At work, ensconced in the midst of a flowerless garden, I often have the feeling that I am awaiting something special, like the flight of a hummingbird framed in the viewfinder. I don’t lose hope, because occasionally something really does happen.

Martin Desilets holds an MFA from Université du Québec à Montréal. Through hybrid procedures and mediated actions, he questions the legacy of modernist painting, particularly abstraction. His research, along with that of other artists, contributes to an indetermination and possible expansion of the fields of photography and painting.

Playful and/or poetic, my works are spaces where I explore the essence of materials. Enthralled by the truth of things (Truth: “knowledge consistent with reality, nature of what really exists and is such as it appears”. Larousse dictionary) I choose the material for its chemical and physical properties. In my creative process, I give priority to the formal refinement and stylization that I associate to some manufacturing processes using addition and accumulation. I create density systems which echo Earth and today's society.

My drawings and paintings are those of the sculptress who harnesses the color medium and its support as materials by looking for opportunities to associate them. My sculptures, sculptural installations, and monumental works – most often inspired by organic shapes – are organized structures where the color, the textured and graphical aspect of surfaces, as well as the mechanical set-up, generate an experience of matter, form, and space.

Hélène Rochette has been involved in the Quebec visual arts scene for over thirty years. She has received grants from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec and the Canada Council for the Arts, and has displayed her works in solo and group shows, notably Les terriers autres territoires which premiered at the 2012 edition of Montréal Art Souterrain. She has created over twenty five public art works, such as Les fluides (2007) at the Montmorency metro station in Laval, Plonger (2008) at the Samuel-de-Champlain promenade and Les hautes herbes (2013) at the Lévis CSSS. Her works are part of the Prêt d’oeuvres d’art collection of the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, the Loto-Québec collection and several private collections.

Marie-Eve Beaulieu

(English follows)

Marie-Eve Beaulieu
Artist in Residence

In my pictorial research I explore themes of writing, interference and censorship through the repetition of juxtaposed, intertwined and comingled signs and motifs. Sometimes, I create brief painting series with minimal interventions, at other times the accumulations and leftover paint completely overtake the space. Regardless of the chosen approach, the gesture is at the heart of the creative process. In an environment in which we are constantly being bombarded by information and interrupted, and in which everyday distraction is omnipresent, painting and printmaking act as a brake, a slowing down, a means to question our choices, both as an artist and as a citizen. Like various interfaces, my projects are rooted in this reality and they are characterized both by their multiplicity and disparity.

Marie-Eve Beaulieu has always thought that painting has a magical power: to be, the sometimes harsh, reflection of what we are. This is why she explores its contours, observes it, scrutinizes, touches, turns it upside down, and quite often, rejects it in a visceral love-hate relationship. Alongside this practice, she also does serious things: an MFA at Université du Québec à Montréal (2014) and exhibitions in several Montreal galleries. She has also won real prizes: the Sylvie and Simon Blais Award for Emerging Visual Artists (2013) and the McAbbie award for Excellence in Painting (2015). Since 2012, she has made use of a Transatlantic tunnel (Un tunnel transatlantique) to travel from Montreal to Leipzig (Germany) as part of an ambitious exchange project with artists from Canada and Germany. Originally from Baie Comeau, she now lives in Montreal. She is represented by the Galerie Simon Blais.

I have come to realize that the way I understand the world around me, as well as my identity (or identities), is largely based on the languages through which I think about a subject; and much less dependent on the place I come from or where I live. I examine the subjects that intrigue me through the prism of language and I explore language and the association of different words to examine ‘meaning’ in the space that is at the intersection of different languages

Mana Rouholamini’s work deals with words and languages. She received her MFA from York University and her BFA from Azad University in Tehran, Iran. The artist would like to acknowledge funding support from the Ontario Arts Council, an agency of the Government of Ontario.

(English follows)

The everyday forms the bulk of the social body’s experiences and I see ample opportunity to investigate how we navigate through it. With humour and sincerity I question the value that we as a culture place upon common objects or actions. Moreover, I use improvisation as a technique to respond to the stimulus of an environment.

Curious about the reciprocal relationship between landscape and self, I play with the notion that place and space form a psychogeographical interaction and experience of the everyday and that within this interaction there is a subtle interplay between the poetic and the political. In my practice, I explore concepts related to site-specificity, the everyday, the mundane, the relationship between power and the gendered body, and the occurrence of failure – or at least when failure becomes meaningful.

In my most recent body of work, I pair sculpture with photography to complicate the physical boundaries between representation and objecthood. For example, the image pictured above is both a photograph and a sculpture depicting a monumental plaster encased bridal bouquet that I purchased second-hand. The photograph highlights details of the form and surface in order to draw attention to the shapes, curves, crevices and texture of the object as well as the complicated relationship between home and the feminist body. In other words, the photos embrace powerful imagery and symbolism through their embodiment of the political and the personal.

Since completing her MFA at the University of Ottawa in 2013, Meredith Snider now calls the Ottawa/Gatineau region home. As an inter-disciplinary artist she participates in national and international media festivals, residencies and exhibitions. She is the co-founder and Director of PDA Projects and a sessional instructor at the University of Ottawa. The artist gratefully acknowledges the support of the Ontario Arts Council.

My work is based on collage. I make scissor cut-outs and assemble my compositions using coloured cardboard. This resonates with my desire to recreate the colour surfaces I am fond of in painting.

This process results in images which evoke craft activities, but the pretty compositions quickly reveal another dimension. In my cut-outs an artificial world opens up, a world which allows me to question the one I live in.

I’ve always viewed the nature that we domesticate, the food we prepare and the objects we fashion as leading to somewhat strange customs, ones which serve as a starting point for the development of stylized scenarios. But let us not be fooled: there is always a chipped piece in the porcelain dinner service. Banquets are shattered and the overloaded shelves cave in under the weight of the potted plans. In a world of planned obsolescence, objects break, slip away and play tricks on us.

Originally from Quebec City, Annie Descôteaux lives and works Montreal. She holds a BFA from Concordia University and has had presented her work in solo shows at L’Œil de poisson (2015) and Axenéo7 (2012). Moreover, she has participated in many group events such as Stations, People, Eat, Drink at the Parisian Laundry (2014) and Champs amical at Occurrence (2014). She has been awarded grants by the Canada Council for the Arts (2010) and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (2009). Her work focuses on the storytelling potential instilled in everyday objects as well as their programmed obsolescence.

See what is always here. Right here, where we are; present, looking. Like our cameras we see light reflecting off all the surfaces in front of us, but our own porous layers absorb that light, and this, we feel. The photographs are also surfaces reflecting us back to ourselves, but step aside a little and they return us to the immediate world of other shiny surfaces, subtle movements, almost imperceptible wisps of things set adrift with the slightest breath. Here where we are, everything is in constant motion— ungraspable -- but worth every scrap of attention we give, trying to do just that.

Karilee Fuglem is a Montrealer with roots in British Columbia. Her artwork takes the form of drawing, photography, writing and artist books, along with spatial installations often made with barely perceptible materials. It has been presented in solo and group exhibitions across Canada, and is part of public and private collections. A finalist for Montreal's Prix Louis-Comtois in 2010, Fuglem is represented by Pierre-François Ouellette art contemporain, where she has exhibited regularly since 2002.

Confronted by the assault on the Boreal forest, you also discover the forest.

My sculptural ceramic practice draws on my experience working in reforestation in the Canadian North. The images and representations of charred organic material are derived from forest landscapes called burns : twice devastated land subjected to deforestation and then subsequently to forest fire.  In these vast burned sylviculture sites, mechanical incursions mix with the strength and beauty of nature, and a constant air of devastation mixes with the possibility of magnificent regeneration.

The work PROUNS(SLASH) is inspired by Canada’s reforestation landscapes , by the Japanese video game Katamari Damacy, and present a juxtaposition of two and three-dimensional media. Forcing a relationship between object and image, my work examines and emphasizes the materiality and undeniable physical presence of the ceramic medium.

The legend of Katamari Damacy tells the story of a young prince who attempts to reconstruct the stars of the Universe, accidentally annihilated by his father the King of All Cosmos. To do this, the prince rolls adhesive Katamari balls on the ground that collect all objects in their passage. When each ball is large enough, it is launched into space by the prince and is transformed into a new star.

Veronika Horlik, is a Montreal ceramic artist who divides her time between her studio practice, and teaching in Visual Arts/Ceramics at John Abbott College, and Art Education at McGill University. From 1995 to 2008, she also worked in seasonal reforestation in Canada’s forestry industry.

Chloé Beaulac

Chloé Beaulac
Artiste en résidence / Artist in Residence

(English follows)

Artist in Residence

Chloé Beaulac communicates her perception and understanding of identity, know-how and rites of passage. She makes use of photography, drawing, silk-screening, painting, installation and sculpture. Driven by her personal philosophical quest, her work is resolutely autobiographical. She works from a documentation based on her memories and personal collection of objects. Beaulac deploys a deconstruction–reconstruction process in order to create a personal iconography and history, which often takes the shape of wildly imaginative graphic novels or contemporary photo-novels. Her work is not dictated by pre-established rules, except for those guiding journeys into the unknown, rituals and transformations.

Chloé Beaulac is a multidisciplinary artist. Understanding and depicting our role in nature and history is at the heart of her artistic pursuit. In the manner of an explorer, she travels a territory and lets herself be permeated by its history, myths, and intrinsic character Through photography, silk-screening, drawing, painting and sculpture, Beaulac draws on her encounters with nature in order to share her sensory experiences with viewers. She thus invites viewers to explore supernatural environments on their own terms.

Nadia Seboussi

Nadia Seboussi
Artiste en résidence / Artist in Residence

(English follows)

Nadia Seboussi
Artist in Residence

Nadia Seboussi is interested in the problematic of displacement, at once on a formal, aesthetic and transcultural level. The figure of the “displaced person” is at the core of her research, for the migration phenomenon is directly linked to socio-political problems brought about by globalization or war. In parallel to this theme, she has explored the memory of the Algerian civil war, as well as the complex relationship between the South and the North. Since 2010, she has worked on a new body of works titled Connecter les mémoires des peuples (Connecting Memory) in reference to the impact civil wars have on the collective imaginary of peoples who experience them. In her research, she reflects on the media reception of these conflicts, all the while questioning the representation of contemporary political violence via media images. Her work is situated at the intersection of documentary, the essay and video, and it favours an installation approach with an in-depth reflection about the possibilities of storytelling and the narrative structures associated with it.

Nadia Seboussi is a Montreal-based artist of Algerian origin. She holds a degree in electronic engineering and she worked as a print journalist in the francophone Algerian press before immigrating to Canada. At first a self-taught visual artist, she then went on to study visual and media arts at the Université du Québec à Montréal, where she eventually completed an MFA in 2013. She has received several grants and has been awarded numerous prizes, such the Pierre-Ayot award  for outstanding achievement in the visual arts the Jacques de Tannancours award for her academic accomplishments, the Prix Feminin de la relève awarded by the Festival de video in Montréal, the Prix GIV, and the Prix Studio XX. In 2013, she received the Claudine and Stephen Bronfman Fellowship in Contemporary Art. Her work has been exhibited in France, Spain, Mexico, Cuba and Montreal and, in 2014, she took part in the Biennale Internationale de l'image en movement (BIM) in Argentina. She has upcoming exhibitions in Toronto and Montreal.

My practice focuses on the borders between various artistic disciplines. The ambiguity of the created works situates them at the limits of drawing, engraving and photography. By way of a research process guided by a curiosity in matter and the display of works in clusters, my creative activity highlights the intrinsic qualities of the materials and partakes in a fundamental redefinition of the techniques used.

A particular relationship to the importance of plastic details is at the root of my research approach. The resulting works allow viewers to travel through magnified pictorial microcosms, which thus reveal small topographies and fine elements that would otherwise not be visible. The pared down visual quality of these works makes it possible to glimpse the complexity inherent in the materials used to make them. By proposing a varied reading system in which diverse visual art languages overlap, I question the photographic camera and the practices derived from it.

Andréanne Gagnon lives and works in Quebec City. She holds an BFA from Université Laval (2013). Her works have been presented in group and solo exhibitions at the Salle Alphonse-Desjardins at Université Laval, VU PHOTO, Caravansérail, Espace F, the first Foire en art actuel de Québec presented at l’Œil de Poisson, and The Artist Project/Untapped Emerging Artist (Toronto), to name but these. She has an upcoming exhibition at l’Usine C, and she is currently working on a collaboration project with ZOCALO to produce works for an artist book publication.

Karen Kraven
Artist in Residence

Born in London, Ontario, Karen Kraven lives and works in Montreal. Her work set up unexpected encounters between sculptures and images, uncanny resemblances and misleading juxtapositions. Like a stage or film set that's been frozen in time, these spaces confound and delight through the practiced strategies of a con artist. Kraven exploits the illusion and attraction found in such pursuits as sports, hunting, fishing and playing card games. These motifs take the guise of everyday items, handmade surrogates and decoys. Shifting and mutating, they collapse upon one another, mesmerizing us as they reappear enlarged, divided and flattened.

Kraven holds an MFA from Concordia University (Montreal) where she was the recipient of the Dale & Nick Tedeschi Fellowship. Recent solo exhibitions include "Razzle Dazzle Sis Boom Bah" at the Darling Foundry (Montreal), "A Mucker and a Grinder" at Parisian Laundry and "As Above, So Below" at Centre Clark (Montreal). Her work has also been shown at Centre Dare-Dare (Montreal), Leonard & Ellen Bina Gallery (Montreal) and Blackwood Gallery (University of Toronto Mississauga). She has participated in artist's residencies at The Banff Centre and with Reverse Pedagogy (Venice). From 2013-2016, she will have a Montreal Artist's Creation Studio at the Darling Foundry (Montreal).
