Confronted by the assault on the Boreal forest, you also discover the forest.

My sculptural ceramic practice draws on my experience working in reforestation in the Canadian North. The images and representations of charred organic material are derived from forest landscapes called burns : twice devastated land subjected to deforestation and then subsequently to forest fire.  In these vast burned sylviculture sites, mechanical incursions mix with the strength and beauty of nature, and a constant air of devastation mixes with the possibility of magnificent regeneration.

The work PROUNS(SLASH) is inspired by Canada’s reforestation landscapes , by the Japanese video game Katamari Damacy, and present a juxtaposition of two and three-dimensional media. Forcing a relationship between object and image, my work examines and emphasizes the materiality and undeniable physical presence of the ceramic medium.

The legend of Katamari Damacy tells the story of a young prince who attempts to reconstruct the stars of the Universe, accidentally annihilated by his father the King of All Cosmos. To do this, the prince rolls adhesive Katamari balls on the ground that collect all objects in their passage. When each ball is large enough, it is launched into space by the prince and is transformed into a new star.

Veronika Horlik, is a Montreal ceramic artist who divides her time between her studio practice, and teaching in Visual Arts/Ceramics at John Abbott College, and Art Education at McGill University. From 1995 to 2008, she also worked in seasonal reforestation in Canada’s forestry industry.

Chloé Beaulac

Chloé Beaulac
Artiste en résidence / Artist in Residence

(English follows)

Artist in Residence

Chloé Beaulac communicates her perception and understanding of identity, know-how and rites of passage. She makes use of photography, drawing, silk-screening, painting, installation and sculpture. Driven by her personal philosophical quest, her work is resolutely autobiographical. She works from a documentation based on her memories and personal collection of objects. Beaulac deploys a deconstruction–reconstruction process in order to create a personal iconography and history, which often takes the shape of wildly imaginative graphic novels or contemporary photo-novels. Her work is not dictated by pre-established rules, except for those guiding journeys into the unknown, rituals and transformations.

Chloé Beaulac is a multidisciplinary artist. Understanding and depicting our role in nature and history is at the heart of her artistic pursuit. In the manner of an explorer, she travels a territory and lets herself be permeated by its history, myths, and intrinsic character Through photography, silk-screening, drawing, painting and sculpture, Beaulac draws on her encounters with nature in order to share her sensory experiences with viewers. She thus invites viewers to explore supernatural environments on their own terms.

Nadia Seboussi

Nadia Seboussi
Artiste en résidence / Artist in Residence

(English follows)

Nadia Seboussi

Nadia Seboussi is interested in the problematic of displacement, at once on a formal, aesthetic and transcultural level. The figure of the “displaced person” is at the core of her research, for the migration phenomenon is directly linked to socio-political problems brought about by globalization or war. In parallel to this theme, she has explored the memory of the Algerian civil war, as well as the complex relationship between the South and the North. Since 2010, she has worked on a new body of works titled Connecter les mémoires des peuples (Connecting Memory) in reference to the impact civil wars have on the collective imaginary of peoples who experience them. In her research, she reflects on the media reception of these conflicts, all the while questioning the representation of contemporary political violence via media images. Her work is situated at the intersection of documentary, the essay and video, and it favours an installation approach with an in-depth reflection about the possibilities of storytelling and the narrative structures associated with it.

Nadia Seboussi is a Montreal-based artist of Algerian origin. She holds a degree in electronic engineering and she worked as a print journalist in the francophone Algerian press before immigrating to Canada. At first a self-taught visual artist, she then went on to study visual and media arts at the Université du Québec à Montréal, where she eventually completed an MFA in 2013. She has received several grants and has been awarded numerous prizes, such the Pierre-Ayot award  for outstanding achievement in the visual arts the Jacques de Tannancours award for her academic accomplishments, the Prix Feminin de la relève awarded by the Festival de video in Montréal, the Prix GIV, and the Prix Studio XX. In 2013, she received the Claudine and Stephen Bronfman Fellowship in Contemporary Art. Her work has been exhibited in France, Spain, Mexico, Cuba and Montreal and, in 2014, she took part in the Biennale Internationale de l'image en movement (BIM) in Argentina. She has upcoming exhibitions in Toronto and Montreal.

My practice focuses on the borders between various artistic disciplines. The ambiguity of the created works situates them at the limits of drawing, engraving and photography. By way of a research process guided by a curiosity in matter and the display of works in clusters, my creative activity highlights the intrinsic qualities of the materials and partakes in a fundamental redefinition of the techniques used.

A particular relationship to the importance of plastic details is at the root of my research approach. The resulting works allow viewers to travel through magnified pictorial microcosms, which thus reveal small topographies and fine elements that would otherwise not be visible. The pared down visual quality of these works makes it possible to glimpse the complexity inherent in the materials used to make them. By proposing a varied reading system in which diverse visual art languages overlap, I question the photographic camera and the practices derived from it.

Andréanne Gagnon lives and works in Quebec City. She holds an BFA from Université Laval (2013). Her works have been presented in group and solo exhibitions at the Salle Alphonse-Desjardins at Université Laval, VU PHOTO, Caravansérail, Espace F, the first Foire en art actuel de Québec presented at l’Œil de Poisson, and The Artist Project/Untapped Emerging Artist (Toronto), to name but these. She has an upcoming exhibition at l’Usine C, and she is currently working on a collaboration project with ZOCALO to produce works for an artist book publication.

Born in London, Ontario, Karen Kraven lives and works in Montreal. Her work set up unexpected encounters between sculptures and images, uncanny resemblances and misleading juxtapositions. Like a stage or film set that's been frozen in time, these spaces confound and delight through the practiced strategies of a con artist. Kraven exploits the illusion and attraction found in such pursuits as sports, hunting, fishing and playing card games. These motifs take the guise of everyday items, handmade surrogates and decoys. Shifting and mutating, they collapse upon one another, mesmerizing us as they reappear enlarged, divided and flattened.

Kraven holds an MFA from Concordia University (Montreal) where she was the recipient of the Dale & Nick Tedeschi Fellowship. Recent solo exhibitions include "Razzle Dazzle Sis Boom Bah" at the Darling Foundry (Montreal), "A Mucker and a Grinder" at Parisian Laundry and "As Above, So Below" at Centre Clark (Montreal).

My work is guided by a deep interest in collecting and characterized by a broad display of small pieces. I accumulate and enumerate to create sequences of variations, assortments, and continual inventories. This practice, reminiscent of a collector’s meticulous gestures, is expressed in two ways: through objects and through drawings which evoke architecture, nature or everyday life. I make familiar and strange objects, at once rough and delicate, pared down and complex, using mainly plaster, casting, assemblage or direct carving techniques. I create drawings that are both polished and detailed, which play with a range of subjects that I condense and reinterpret. By way of repetition and recurrence, these subtly rendered drawings become fragments of an inventory in which they unfold like motifs.

Originally from Gaspésie, Émilie Bernard lives and works in Quebec City, where she earned a MFA at Université Laval. Her work has been presented in several artist-run centres, galleries and exhibition centres in Quebec, Finland and Iceland. Since 2011, she has primarily devoted her time to creation residencies. She notably developed projects at the Vermont Studio Center (US), the Kulttuurikauppila Art Centre (Finland), The Association of Icelandic Visual Artists (Iceland), the Akos Centre (Armenia) and l’Œil de Poisson (Quebec City). To date, she has been supported by the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, Première Ovation and the Canada Council for the Arts.

Exposition David Lafrance

David Lafrance
La peur de perdre
(English follows)

David Lafrance
La peur de perdre

EXHIBITION February 19, 2015 / April 30, 2015
OPENING Thursday, February 19, 5 p.m

David Lafrance is presenting La peur de perdre at the Centre SAGAMIE in Alma. This exhibition comprises a series of dense and complex miniature paintings illustrating the occupation of a place: interior environments in the process of becoming a home.

This series is part of an ongoing project focused on the everyday and proximity. Though the work is supported by the immanence of the real, it pushes the graphic and aesthetic possibilities of modern painting to its limits. The exhibited body of work was inspired by a home move in which everyday objects had to be reconsidered and analyzed one by one. Should it be kept, thrown out, given away or sold? It is in this domestic chaos that the current series slowly began to arise. The presented works stimulate thought about topical socioeconomic subjects such as austerity, hyper-consumption, globalization, class struggle and technology dependence.

This visual research brings together a multitude of not always compatible subjects, which take shape as a symbolic composition born of a mix between chance and conscious choice. The “interior design”—combining the still-life and abstraction—causes the themes of the home and acquisition to clash. Here, sickly accumulations alternate with neglected places. These signs express the malaise of the artist, who is torn between material abundance and social crisis, two major sources of anxiety in our era.

Though the paintings emphasize the excessive abundance of material goods, they are created on a very small, almost miniature scale, and thus take up hardly any space, which facilitates their transportation and storage. In thus inscribing the resolution in the support, the artist provides some hope for a situation in which limited space can lead to a loss of control.

David Lafrance was born in 1976 in Quebec and he lives and works in Montreal. In 2011, he graduated from Concordia University (Montreal) with a specialization in painting and drawing. For the last few years the painter, who is also an engraver and sculptor, has had several exhibitions in Quebec, Canada and the US. He has received grants from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec and his works are part of several public and corporate collections. In addition to his visual work, his artistic practice also includes experimental and noise music. He is the cofounder, alongside his brother Vincent, of the Lafrance Toys project, which consists of folk sculptures created in a self-taught manner. He is represented by the Galerie Hugues Charbonneau

Through the use of various figurative frameworks, the artist creates sensory and stimulating paintings. His compositions are motivated by a more or less logical accumulation of subjects that reference current social concerns. At the root of this aesthetically and symbolically inflected quest there is a malaise, a struggle with identity and self-determination issues brought about by the spiritual bareness of our times. He draws his inspiration from the way in which people consume, engage in escapism, fantasize and cultivate a taste for beautiful things and security as a refuge.

(English follows)

Anne-Marie Ouellet and Thomas Sinou founded L’eau du bain in 2008 to create theatrical, installation and sound works. The three parts of the “La trilogie de la mort de l’enfant” were presented in various festivals in Quebec and in France. In 2011, L’eau du bain was invited to undertake a one-year residency at Mains d’Œuvres, located on the outskirts of Paris. In collaboration with Usine C, L’eau du bain is currently working on a new cycle with the series “Portraits”, which consists of performative works featuring adolescents and elderly persons. Le son de l’ère est froid is the company’s sixth project.

Drawing on theatre, sound art and installation, L’eau de bain’s creations are hybrid mixtures intent on crossing borders. With each new work, the rules of the game are modified and new machines are developed to trigger a veritable interaction between the space, sound environment, artists, audience and elements of the real. From the frozen Lac Saint-Jean lake to nursing homes, the group travels to create, always eager to go beyond the stage in search of new landscapes and characters. In their works, it is often impossible to distinguish between fact and fiction.

International Biennial Art Invitational (L.A. U.S.A.), Ars Electronica (Linz, Austria), L.A. Freewave (L.A. My work raises questions about the origin of images. Through the use of arbitrary visual associations, it explores issues related to the sources of mental representations. Since 1997, I have been developing a body of work called Lanternes/ Lighthouses, which includes the Larger Than Life lightboxes series. Those pictures use the characteristics of macrophotography to question the gap between visual representations and their language counterparts. The idea of “picturing” something is transposed in the titles to provoke a semantic shift that will alter the initial interpretation of the image.

(English follows)

Artist in Residence

I use my work to question - in a reflective way- the less visible aspects of making art, at times analyzing how images are constructed, represented and mediated. Projects are generally characterized as historical site related works made over several months and develop out of site-specific research, leading to precise works that respond to a given context.  Many of these works begin out of an interest in the architecture, the urban plan, and personal histories of a particular place.

Bauer lives and works in Montreal. She has presented her work in solo exhibitions at Galerie Nicolas Robert; Sporobole; YYZ Artist Outlet; Gallery Les Territoires; The University of Toronto Art Centre and in the Projection Access Space at the Art Gallery of Mississauga. Recently, Bauer's work was included in The Work Ahead of Us at the Musée d'art Contemporain de Montréal; Decisive Moments, Somewhere Else at Trinity Square Video, Art Metropole and Convenience gallery (w Jon Knowles). Bauer has been awarded two Conseil des Arts et Lettres studio residencies, one in New York City as part of the Québec-New York State residency exchange (2012), and the other at the Couvent des Récollets, in Paris (2013). Upcoming activities include a solo exhibition at Modern Fuel in Kingston.

For quite some time now, the photographic representation of the land has been the focus of my artistic research. I seek to represent an idea of a nature that is both wild or unsettling and bucolic and pastoral. My photographic compositions convey underlying tensions and antinomies which may trigger feelings of the uncanny (S. Freud). I aim to compose landscapes which are inviting, but which also comprise a dramatic, or even troubling potential.

I usually develop my work in a series approach by exploring a type of natural landscape that is hard to access or little-known. These landscapes are selected on the basis of their aesthetic and graphic potential as well as for the dramatic charge I sense within them. I work onsite and try to step out of my comfort zone in order to expose myself to the site’s difficulties and to discover and experience its characteristics. In the field, I explore and capture these landscapes with the help of various old or recent, analog or digital cameras. The subsequent digital modifications of the shots enable me to assemble the photographic materials inherent in each of the mediums I use. These modifications make it possible to highlight certain of the initial shots’ dramatic effects, to rework the composition and to assemble the photographic materials. This process results in a large-scale structured surface in which the viewer can confront the tensions I seek to create on a visual and formal level.

Whether it be the vast burned forests of northern Quebec (Ce qu’arbre a dit), the mangroves of the Florida Everglades (Le Souffle d’Écho) or the Laurentides and Charlevoix lake landscapes (Arcadia), I explore these environments in search for compositions which are at once welcoming and poetic, and, in some regards, oppressive and unsettling.

Alain Lefort was born in 1968 in Montreal (Canada), where he currently lives and works. He studied photography at Concordia University in Montreal. He has been involved in the Montreal art milieu since 1992. His work is on permanent display in Montreal and Quebec City through Lacerte Art contemporain, as well as at the Neubacher Shor Contemporary in Toronto. Alain Lefort has had over fifty solo and group exhibitions in Quebec and abroad (Albania, the US, Portugal...). His works have notably been acquired by the Cirque du Soleil, the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, Loto-Québec and UMA (La Maison de l’image et de la photographie). Several publications have also been dedicated to his work.

Emmanuelle Jacques

Emmanuelle Jacques
Artiste en résidence / Artist in Residence
(English follows)

Emmanuelle Jacques
Artist in Residence

Emmanuelle Jacques’s practice is rooted in drawing and the print media. Her work is presented in various forms such as installations, artist books, videos, relational art or other manoeuvres. She develops her work by way of projects, some of which have been unfolding in parallel for several years. In pursuing repetitive, even endless tasks, she creates contexts that are conducive to lengthy reflection, which allows her to articulate ideas and make her work meaningful. Having been influenced by the philosophy of the absurd, she views the world with both a sense of wonder and, due to the impossibility of finding meaning in it, one of revolt. Her recent projects explore notions of space and territory, whether it be through their appropriation by individuals or communities (Une cartographie subjective, Les chemins de traverse), their poetic and political resonance (Lieux communs: Commonplaces) or their imaginary dimension (La création de l’univers, Cartographies spontanées).

Emmanuelle Jacques lives in Montreal where she earned a BFA at UQAM in 2004. She has presented her work, given workshops and carried out residency projects in Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Moncton, Saint John’s, Baie-Comeau, Natashquan and the Îles-de-la-Madeleine. Her artist book Lieux communs: Commonplaces was a finalist in the Artist Book of the Moment competition at the Art Gallery of York University (Toronto, 2012). An active member of her milieu, she was the president of Arprim's board of directors and for 5 years she took part in the organization’s transformation into an artist-run centre dedicated to the dissemination of contemporary print-related art practices.

Aude Moreau

Aude Moreau
Artiste en résidence / Artist in Residence
(English follows)

Aude Moreau
Artist in Residence

Since 2010, Aude Moreau has been developing site-specific intervention projects in which she uses the windows of office buildings in metropolitan areas to inscribe text. These interventions are constructed with the light signal emitted by the respective offices, thus using the energy source already present in the illuminated city in order to replay its spectacle. The underlying dynamic of the approach favours a perspective in which the artistic intervention proceeds from inside urban production in view of re-appropriating the symbolic space of the city. This work cycle, which began with an initial intervention at the Montreal Stock Exchange Tower, is ongoing with two projects currently in progress in Los Angeles and Manhattan. As part of this residency at the Centre SAGAMIE, the artist will develop a body of works which will draw on the documentation of the project’s various production stages.

Aude Moreau holds a MFA from the Université du Québec à Montréal. Her interventions and installations have been presented in Quebec, the US, France, Italy, the Czech Republic and Luxembourg. In 2011, she received the Claudine and Stephen Bronfman Fellowship in Contemporary Art as well as the Prix Powerhouse Galerie La Centrale. She recently exhibited her work at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal and the Galerie de l’UQAM as part of the Montreal/Brooklyn event. Her works are part of the Loto-Québec collection, the Prêt d’œuvres d’art at the Musée National des Beaux-Arts du Québec and the Canada Council Art Bank. She is represented by the Galerie Antoine Ertaskir.

Marie Brunet
Artist in Residence

For this residency at the Centre SAGAMIE, I intend to pursue my research about integrating photography with loom weaving, all the while broadening photography’s application to printed fabrics of various types. This exploration has been made possible thanks to a research/creation grant from the Conseil des Arts de Saguenay in partnership with the Fjord-du-Saguenay MRC. In 2013, funding from the Programme de soutien aux initiatives culturelles du milieu, jointly supported by the MRC of the Fjord-du-Saguenay and the artist-run centre Le Lobe in Chicoutimi, in collaboration with the Centre SAGAMIE in Alma, enabled me to explore loom weaving techniques by integrating photomontages in view of creating large-scale murals with the participation of the Cercle des Fermières.

Born in Quebec City in 1960, Marie Brunet holds a BFA (Université du Québec à Montréal, 1983). In 1984, she founded La Presse la Bête à Cornes studio (Montreal), which is dedicated to silkscreen production and dissemination. Since 2000, her work has been shown on many occasions in Canada, Germany, India and France. She is a member of various cultural development committees and has created several public works as part of the policy to integrate art with architecture and the environment. Since 2002, she lives and works in Anse-Saint-Jean.
